A PALLIATIVE care centre for Hunter children dying of cancer will be another step closer to being realised thanks to the effort of the Hunter branch of the Australian Hotels Association, which is hosting another black tie ball tonight to raise money for the cause.

Last year the organisation donated $40,000 to the Nicholas Trust, set up in memory of Craig and Jenny Butters's son Nic, who died in 2004 following his nine-year battle with cancer.

The couple learned first-hand about the need for a palliative care centre for Hunter children during the harrowing experience, and set about trying to raise the $2.5 million needed to build the centre.

Tonight's fund-raising ball is at the Newcastle Jockey Club from 6.30.
